Wendy's Writing Practice 08

In some organizations, promotions are based on seniority, while in other organizations, promotions are based on performance. Discuss the advantages of each position. Then indicate which position you think is best and why.

People always have different opinions of the issues in their organizations, and promotions are always the most popular ones. The discussions will never end until the results of promotions are released. It is not surprised that some organizations prefer to decide the promotions based on seniority in which they may concern to thank for the loyalty of these seniors; on the other hand, performance may be another considering of promotions in which the contributions are the scales of the whole. However, each position must have its own concerns and believes it can get the most benefits.

Generally speaking, promoting the seniors is common in the traditional organizations but this is not absolute. For the sake of respecting the seniors, the organizations tend to give some rewards to their employees. This promotional principle brings at least two advantages to the managers and the workers. First, due to this kind of principle, the workers understand the respect and the manner get much more concern in their working places, and then they will obey this rule and act orderly. This builds a steady environment for them. Next, this principle maintains the workers at the highest rate, and also, they express the best loyalty to their organizations because they believe their devotions will never be overlooked. It's innate that human beings always hope they can gain the rewards for their devotion.

Interestingly, some organizations consider that promotions should depend on one's performance. That means "you earn what you work." Many people are fond of this principle because they think it is equal to judge one's contribution by his or her performance. What's more, the employees will tend to work harder and express their best to the managers, that way the organizations get the most profits during this game in which everyone wants to be the outstanding one. Another benefit is that this promotional principle will especially attract those who have the real abilities, and it also encourages those new bloods to represent their ideas without considering too much about their locations. This may cause a somewhat fluid surrounding but pour more energy and innovation into it.

Even though people hold different opinions of this issue for their own sakes, in this knowledge explosion era, I believe the appropriate competition can bring progression for the organizations. I think it's better to promote the workers based on their performance. For one reason it can prove that the managers are observing their employees and remind that they had better work harder. In contrary, some promotions which depend on seniority would cause some problems. For example, some seniority feel that no matter how they work they can still gain the same reward, so they tend to choose the easiest way-just stay and watch. I think it is the worst side effect of promotions based on seniority. I believe that the organizations are welcome to see their workers act well, so performance will be the best policy to examine the workers.

In a nutshell, no matter promotions are based on seniority or performance, each position has its own advantages and concerns, so it's hard to define which one is better. However, to compare the above pros and cons, if I am the manager of the organization, I will focus on the performance of my workers because I hope that will bring me the best profits.

feedbacks from Joseph:

1. we can see wendy you have spent time arranging and "designing" your writing, you deserve our applaud:)

2.you organize your article by stating the opening first, then to alalyze the point of seniority, and finally you combine the standpoint of performance with your preference in the following.(quite reasonable, fluent, logical, and freshing)

3. you said that you spent too much time writing the article.Truly, your conclusion makes the article more perfect, however, you can delete this paragraph if time is limited in a real test, i think it is okay.

4.I guess wendy you used some time when stating the opening as a start to make a restatement of the two views. As for me, it is painful to make a opening like that in this kind of question, don' you?

Thank you. :)
Indeed, I spent a lot of time to construct this kind of questions because we have to add enough information and to provide our own opinions.
However, I think this kind of questions can improve our ability of logical thinking.
