Participant Observation

To study real-life behaviors, social scientists have to get out in the field and take notes, and they have to do it systematically. A favorite method for many researchers is participant observation. In participant observation, the researcher becomes part of the group under study. This method is often used to study groups that not easy to observe from the outside, such as street gangs or farm laborers. In some studies, no one knows the researcher's identity. However, this is controversial because observing people without their knowledge, or recording their comments without their permission, is not always considered ethical.
